Jon Bradford:
Dear Santa
I have been a “good” boy all year and now it’s payback. I waited patiently for my Android phone – not being tempted by the 3G iPhone (oh I was so tempted). Was it worth the wait? Yes, it does have many drawbacks – but I wouldn’ t give it back. More importantly, what am I hoping for in my stocking this year (in no particular order)?
1. Gdrive
2. Virtual keyboard on Android
3. Android on a netbook
4. An explanation of twitter in less than 500 words
5. New Google Contacts
1. Gdrive. Okay how long have we been waiting for the infamous Google Drive – longer than Android and that’s a long time. How can Google claim to be the saviour of clouding computing and not have an on line storage solution? If it is really that hard just buy DropBox – its great and on various occasions I almost signed up to their 50Gb for $99, but I’d prefer to have all my files under one “virtual roof”.
2. Virtual keyboard on Android. In the last couple of weeks Android has announced with the “cupcake” development branch that this is on the way with a number of other goodies. Don’t get me wrong the keyboard is great, but sometimes I only want a quick response – I mean a Twitter is only 140 characters.
3. Android on a netbook. As with the virtual keyboard, an (unofficial) Android on a netbook might be closer than expected. Something within “cupcake” which has not been picked up in the main stream press is the inclusion of “basic x86 support”!! In addition to this, Gigaom has also started to speculate that 2009 will be the year Android moves to the netbook. All of this discussion might be a red herring – what if we combined Android and Boxee on a netbox to make it a fast, light internet orientated media centre.
4. An explaination for Twitter in less 500 words. I don’t know how many discussions I have started this year attempting to explain Twitter but none have ended successfully. This is only going to get worse as the mainstream wake up to this new addiction. It’s not really anything – it’s a platform – it’s 140 characters of whatever you want it to be. Help – ahhhhh.
5. New Google Contacts. Google does many things well and some things badly – fortunately more of the former than latter. Contacts within Gmail was one of those things which I choose to overlook. Simply put; it is really bad, really really bad. But, enough is enough, the use of Google Contacts is now critical with my newly purchased G1. Come on guys this needs to be sorted out and quickly.
I don’t expect all of these but one or two might be nice during 2009. See ya on the other side.
